Starting From The Inside Out

It took me a while to figure out how to start this blog, since I have never written a fitness blog before, or any other blog for that matter. “Hello my name is Lindsey and yes I am a virgin blogger”. So I thought where is a good place to start a fitness blog?

Let’s start at the beginning. What do you need before you begin any successful work out plan? The answer is easy, motivation. It’s easy to think of what motivates you, but hard to keep the focus on that motivation once you get started. Motivation is the only thing that will get you out of bed for that 5am run before work or run that extra mile when you feel like your going to pass out.

So what motivates you? Some people are motivated by photographs of celebrities or models, others may be motivated by a pair of pants that no longer fit or teeny bikini they would like to get into before summer hits. Others do it for the overall health benefits (which in my opinion should always be the most important motivator). Whatever your motivation is, in order for it to be effective you must always have a constant reminder. Once you find motivation it’s easier to push yourself toward your goals.

What motivates you?

Post pictures that motivate you in your house, car, and desk at work wherever you look daily. Leave yourself notes “You got this,” “You can accomplish anything,” “never give up”. Make a goal board or write in a notebook of the exercises you did and how long you did each and if it was a good experience or bad. It makes your progress visual rather than trying to remember what worked and what didn’t. It may sound cheesy, but it’s hard to stay on track, and that small reminder can mean the difference between a really amazing work out and not being able to get off your couch. Its also key to surround yourself with positive people who will help you move toward your goal and not pressure you or make you feel bad about wanting to change. Either way you have to decide what is most important to you.

Your next step is, and this is an important one, you ready??…. Stop comparing your self to other people!! You are your own person. Your body is unique in its self, so looking at others and wanting their body isn’t going to happen. However, you can be the most amazing version of you there is. So stop competing with others and start competing with your self. This is important, so remember it.

blog pic1Now that we have established what you need to conquer on the inside let’s talk about the outside factors. Trying to find the time to work out may be a difficult task when life gets busy. The problem is you should never have to “find” the time. You must “make” the time to work out. I have two kids, a full time job, and I still work out 6-7 days a week. “How do I do it you ask”? The key is to find an activity you enjoy, don’t make it a chore. Make it your “you” time. Think of it as a chance to reconnect with your body. If you’re hitting the gym and sitting on a treadmill for hours you’re not going to be inclined to repeat this week after week. So try new activities to keep your interest. There’s zumba, yoga, crossfit, bootcamp, weight training, and heck even strip tease classes. Anything that keeps your attention and is something you enjoy. You can find most of these at your local gym, or a company that specializes in fitness classes. In my upcoming blogs I’m going to be trying out some of these classes and writing about my experience so keep coming back to see what fitness craze I try next.

And that’s it. Recap – establish your motivation, and remind yourself constantly of your motivation. Choose a physical activity(s) that is fun, it will help keep you interested, and not make it a chore. Start your fitness board or journal this week so by next month you will be able to look back and see your progress.

I hope this sparks at least one person’s interest, or hopefully helps a few people along the way, and if not I promise Ill get better, so enjoy!
